2024 Election: Your Vote, Nevada’s Future

The 2024 Political Election: A Crucial Decision for Nevada Residents

The 2024 election cycle is rapidly approaching, and it promises to be a pivotal moment for Nevada and the nation as a whole. As residents of the Silver State prepare to head to the polls, many critical issues are on the ballot, from the national presidential race to key local elections that will shape the future of the state.

In this blog post, we will explore the upcoming political election from the perspective of Nevada voters. We'll examine the key races, the pressing issues that matter most to Nevadans, and the impact of new voting laws and procedures. Understanding what’s at stake is essential for making an informed decision in 2024.

Key Races in Nevada's 2024 Election

The Presidential Race

The 2024 presidential race will be a headline-grabbing contest nationwide, and Nevada is no exception. Historically a battleground state, Nevada has garnered significant attention from both major political parties. The state has become increasingly competitive, with its diverse population playing a critical role in the outcome of the presidential election.

Donald Trump is running for a second non-consecutive term, focusing on issues like immigration, economic growth, and national security, while maintaining strong support from his Republican base despite facing legal challenges. Many people view him as a fighter who has stood up to political elites and pushed back against government overreach, making him a champion of the movement to "Make America Great Again."  On the Democratic side, Kamala Harris is running as a candidate herself, moving beyond her role as vice president. Harris's campaign has been met with criticism, as many argue that she failed to deliver on key promises she made as vice president, such as addressing social justice reforms, voting rights protections, and immigration issues. Her challenge will be convincing voters that she can implement the changes she advocated for but did not fully achieve during her time in the White House. This race tests both Trump’s resilience and Harris’s ability to address concerns about her past performance.

Nevada’s six electoral votes may seem small in comparison to larger states like California or Texas, but they have been decisive in past elections. As one of the few swing states, Nevada can tip the scales in a tightly contested presidential race, drawing attention from candidates and campaign operatives alike.

Senate and Congressional Elections

In addition to the presidential race, Nevada will also hold important Senate and Congressional elections in 2024.

In Nevada's 2024 Senate race, Democratic incumbent Jacky Rosen is running for re-election, with a focus on healthcare, climate action, and economic recovery. She faces Republican challenger Sam Brown, a retired Army Captain and Purple Heart recipient who is emphasizing issues like inflation, Veteran’s issues, rising housing costs and government overreach, as well as Chris Cunningham (Libertarian) and Janine Hansen (Independent American Party). This race is expected to be fiercely contested, as Republicans aim to flip the seat and shift the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.

Nevada’s four congressional districts will also see races in 2024. Each district has unique characteristics, ranging from urban Las Vegas to the more rural northern and eastern parts of the state. The balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives could hinge on the outcomes in these districts, making them key battlegrounds for both parties.  In the race for U.S. Congressional District 2, incumbent Republican Mark Amodei seeks re-election, continuing his focus on issues crucial to Northern Nevada, such as mining, land use, and rural economic development. He faces challengers including Greg Kidd (no political party), a tech entrepreneur focusing on modernizing the economy, mining/energy, immigration and job growth, as well as candidates Lynn Chapman (Independent) and Javi Tachiquin (Libertarian), who aim to offer alternatives to his long-standing tenure. The outcome of this race will be significant for the region, particularly for rural areas like Elko County.

Pressing Issues for Nevada Voters

Nevada voters in 2024 are focused on key issues such as economic recovery, job creation, and diversifying the state’s economy, especially in Northern Nevada, where industries like mining, agriculture, and renewable energy play a central role. Housing affordability is a major concern, as home prices have soared in recent years. Healthcare remains another critical issue, with voters looking for improvements to access, affordability, and mental health services. Energy and environmental policies are crucial, with voters favoring candidates who support traditional energy industries, like mining and agriculture, while responsibly developing renewable energy.

Voting Rights and Access

Voting rights have become a significant issue in Nevada and across the country. In 2024, voters will have to navigate a mix of in-person, early, and mail-in voting options. Nevada’s election officials are working to ensure that the process is smooth and secure.

The Role of Young and New Voters

Nevada’s demographics are changing, with a growing population of younger voters and new residents. This shift is expected to play a crucial role in the 2024 election. Young voters, particularly those in their 20s and 30s, have been increasingly active in recent elections, driven by issues such as climate change, social justice, and economic inequality.

As more people move to Nevada from other states—particularly from California—this influx of new residents could alter the political landscape. Many of these newcomers bring different political views and priorities, potentially reshaping Nevada’s status as a battleground state.  This is a key reason for long time Nevadan residents to vote this election!!  Nevada turnout in rural counties is paramount in election results for Nevada.

Nevada's Future at a Crossroads

The 2024 election is set to be one of the most consequential in Nevada’s history. With key races at both the national and local levels, as well as critical issues like the economy, healthcare, and immigration, Nevada voters will have the opportunity to shape the future of the state and the country.

As Nevadans head to the polls, it’s important to stay informed, get involved, and make sure your voice is heard. Whether you vote by mail, early in person, or on Election Day, your vote matters—and the future of Nevada depends on it.

Remember to check your voter registration status, research the candidates, and stay up to date on the issues that matter most to you and your community. This election is about more than just political parties; it’s about the future of the Silver State.
